Smoking Popeye

"The kindergarten kids like to smoke them after school," says Yusuf.Yusuf is a street vendor in central Jakarta selling homemade dry ice pipes for Rp 1,000 ($0.10). He also sells ice creams from a portable cooler.
With the plastic bit in his mouth and a chunk of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) in the chamber, he blows gently down the stem and smoke puffs from the bowl.

"I'm Popeye!" he says.

The dry ice pipes are called Popeye Laut, (laut means sea in Indonesian).
Squatting on the pavement outside the National Museum, Yusuf cuts a short stem of straw and inserts it into a rolled cylinder of plastic. That's it: it's a simple two-part pipe. He drops a cube of dry ice from his ice cream cooler into the chamber and hands the popeye laut to me.
Really, smoking has never been so cool.
